Hickory

C. ovata · Hickory wood is hard, stiff, dense and shock resistant. The combination of strength, toughness, hardness and stiffness found in Hickory wood is not found in any other commercial wood.

It's sapwood is creamy white to tan, heartwood pale to brown, sometimes blotchy or streaky with a darker color.

It is used in making tool handles, pickaxe handles, drum-sticks and wood flooring. Hickory wood is also a preferred type for smoking cured meats.
